Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in the United States, and it is inconvenient and expensive to go to the dermatologist when you're unsure if you should be concerned. We're developing a novel smartphone-enabled tool that allows patients to evaluate skin lesions at home to understand if they are likely to have skin cancer prior to booking a doctor's appointment. We're seeking to partner with a primary care physician, dermatologist, and software engineers to help us grow and seek funding.
Microfluidics-Assisted Cell Screening
Despite the rapid developments in microscopy, many users in biology are forced to use FACS for non-adherent cells in applications that require high throughput, sampling directly from a liquid culture or minimization of perturbative cell handling. In Paulsson Lab at HMS, we developed a method so-called Microfluidics-Assisted Cell Screening (MACS) that addresses this very issue: MACS allows for high-throughput, non-perturbative, automated microscopy, and sorting of non-adherent cells.
Drugs for neurodegenerative diseases frequently fail for lack of efficacy, which is rooted in limited visibility into the mechanistic systems underlying disease. We have developed a new mechanistic simulation platform that records locations and interactions of every molecule in a virtual cell, along with a comprehensive model of pathways involved in Parkinson’s disease. Hosted in the cloud and with pre-built disease models we put this tool in the hands of bench biologists who are able to rapidly test in silico to refine hypotheses before entering the lab, helping to ensure the right molecules are measured, and limiting negative data.
Because of the complexity of biological systems, among 4,000 diseases with known molecular causes, only 200 are treatable. ReviveMed overcomes these complexities by utilizing the most comprehensive data integration platform for biological systems. Our pioneering technology can link metabolomic data to other biological data to translate them to novel therapies.
Approximately 1 out of 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. Early detection is paramount, as the five-year survival rate for breast cancer detected in early stages is over 90% compared to only 22% for detection in Stage IV, but standard mammography screening is a very tedious process and almost half of radiologists report not enjoying that part of their job. Our solution is to detect masses and calcifications in mammograms with a high level of accuracy and sensitivity using deep machine learning. Customers who would find value in this include PACS solutions as a value-adding feature, hospital systems who wish to reduce liability and cost, payers who wish to decrease high radiology malpractice payouts, and of course physicians who wish to improve their practice and reduce malpractice insurance premiums.
Imagine a clinic where people have to not only walk for miles to get healthcare access, but also bring their own hand sanitizer, gloves, and soap during each visit. This is the unfortunate reality in clinics and hospitals that are receiving aid in 3rd world nations. But there's a disconnect between those who need things and those who can fulfill those needs. NeedList is a webapp idea from the CAMTech Global Oncology Hackathon where hospital and clinics' administration can update a list of their physical and skilled needs with estimated deadline of need and be matched with providers like USAID, Red Cross, PeaceCorps, Mass Gen Hospital volunteers who want to and have the resources to help.
Elderly hospitalizations for dehydration costs the US healthcare system $1.5B, and 52 out of 56 elderly care workers we surveyed stated they need better tools for hydration monitoring. Our mission is to provide care takers with the tools they need to be more effective, thereby saving their facilities money and improving the quality of life for their patients. Our product is a combination of proprietary hardware and intuitive software: the Splashband and the Splash app. The Splashband, a fitness-monitor style wristband that contains our patent-pending smart sensor, allows us to passively track changes in physiological hydration over time. That data is sent to the Splash app, used by care takers to know when someone’s hydration is falling, thereby allowing them to intervene and prevent dehydration.
There are currently 25 million scientific papers indexed in the PubMed database representing the majority of humanity’s biomedical knowledge. This number is increasing exponentially with more than 1 million papers published annually since 2011. In addition to its incomprehensible volume, the scientific literature suffers from a quality problem with analyses predicting irreproducibility at 50-90%. Hive Scientific aims to curate the expanding scientific literature on an empirical level using scalable human-computing models. Our goal is to transform the staggering amount of scientific information into predictive knowledge models to guide decision making in biotech and pharma.
Today, collegiate and professional athletes are pushing their bodies further than ever before. Unprecedented training intensity and competition have drawn out incredible performances from out athletes. However, they have also engendered significant skeletomuscular problems. Access to a cheap and accurate technology to analyze body motion and assess muscular imbalance will revolutionize the sports industry. Our mission is to develop innovative biomechanical technologies in the pursuit of optimizing physical fitness and human body performance. We are developing BodyWatch, a hardware and software product that algorithmically tracks body motion, determines muscular imbalances, and suggests corrective exercises to alleviate these deficiencies.
Over 140 million patients suffering from chronic conditions in the United States, including heart diseases, diabetes, mental health disorders and cancers. Most of the exorbitant costs and low quality outcomes come from patients not adhering to their treatments. A lot of these chronic diseases require consistent use of multiple drugs with different potential interactions and food requirements and etc. that make it overwhelming to keep track and adhere correctly for the patient. Our solution is a mobile software platform that helps not only the patient keep track and stick to their treatment plan correctly, but also allow for the doctor or medical provider to track and perform analytics in all facets of the treatment plan.
Countless individuals could benefit from a minimally intrusive way to help normalize or adjust their circadian rhythm. Insomniacs, hard-working professionals and frequent travelers alike are prone to circadian dysregulation, either as a primary or secondary symptom of their lifestyle. Originally conceptualized for astronauts, and based on decades of thorough research by Dr. Cziesler and others, our device is capable of providing circadian reinforcement of sleep or wakefulness via ambient exposure to tuned colors of light. Further, we use sound frequencies to compliment and reinforce the effects of light programs, all delivered in a personalized and non-intrusive manner.
On January 1st, 2015, President Obama passed a law requiring all doctors to switch from paper records to electronic medical records (EMR), otherwise risking increasing federal fines. Large medical practices and hospitals easily switched to expansive EMR platforms like Epic Systems and AthenaHealth. However, solo practitioners and small practices with 10 doctors or less have been neglected -- they're either paying through the nose for expensive, hospital-grade EMRs filled with clunky features slowing down their processes or staying with paper records, thus increasing the incidence of billing mistakes and suffering federal fines. We have built, MedKit, a streamlined, customizable, EMR platform designed specifically for solo practitioners and small practice doctors. Contrary to other systems concocted without doctor input, MedKit is founded upon the contributions of myriad practitioners, resulting in an innovative and intuitive workflow that allows our target market to return to focusing on their patients again.
